 GIS association of Russia has been founded in 1995 as non-governmental and noncommercial public organization. The association has been created for unification of experts of higher educational institutions, research, research-and-production, engineering, design, information and other organizations involved in development and application of geoinformation technologies in the territory of former USSR.
GIS association is the main developer of "Concepts of formation of spatial data infrastructure as element of nation-wide information resources", as well as "Concepts of information systems of town-planning maintenance".
The basic directions of activity of Association are:
- Edition and edition support of special publications (magazines: "Newsletter of GIS association", "Spatial data", Market of geoinformatics of Russia annual compedium , newspaper: "GISinfo", textbooks, geoinformatics dictionary, conducting of thematic columns and some publications in mass media);
- Carrying out of special exhibitions, conferences, seminars, organization of joint participation of system developers in the largest Russian and international exhibitions, conferences, seminars;
- Organization of work of the center on consulting and analysis of development of hardware-software facilities and marketing researches;
- Development of recommendations on geographical data exchange standardization and perfection of normative-legal base;
